BMW VVT technology: the key to improving engine performance and fuel efficiency

The VVT ​​system changes the camshaft phase (the timing of valve opening and closing) to enable the engine to achieve optimal performance at different speeds and loads. The valve timing of traditional engines is fixed, which means that the timing of valve opening and closing is the same under any circumstances. VVT technology can adjust this timing according to the actual needs of the engine, thereby improving the overall efficiency of the engine.

How BMW camshaft phase adjuster works
BMW's VVT system controls the timing of the valves through an electrically or hydraulically driven camshaft phase adjuster. Specifically, the VVT ​​device is controlled by an electronic control unit (ECU) to adjust the relative position between the camshaft and the engine crankshaft to change the opening timing of the valves. This adjustment can optimize engine performance under different driving conditions, such as increasing power when accelerating and improving fuel economy when cruising.

Electrical or hydraulic drive: This drive drives the regulator through electronic signals or oil pressure to change the timing of the valve.

Electronic Control Unit (ECU): The ECU monitors the engine speed, load, temperature and other data in real time through sensors, and adjusts the opening and closing timing of the valve according to these data.

Sensor: The VVT ​​system needs to use sensors to feedback the engine status in real time. Common sensors include camshaft position sensors and crankshaft position sensors. The operation of these sensors enables the ECU to accurately adjust the valve timing.

Regular inspection and maintenance of the VVT ​​system, such as replacing sensors and cleaning oil circuits, is key to ensuring the normal operation of the engine.
